 The Charles Wright Trio

_

Charles Wright was introduced to music at the early age of three, when one of his six brothers, Rick Wright, already an accomplished musician on clarinet and piano, discovered that Charles had perfect pitch and an acute interest in music and art. His parents, while not musicians, loved music and encouraged Charles to develop his talent. Violin and piano lessons were first, but when his brother Jeff brought home Jimi Hendrix Band of Gypsies, guitar quickly became the instument of choice. It wasn't long before Charles got into jazz, hearing masters like George Benson, Miles Davis, John Coltrane, Herbie Hancock, Chick Corea and Weather Report.

Charles attended Duke Ellington School of the Arts in Washington, DC where he honed his skills next to trumpeter Wallace Roney and guitarist Mike Scott (Prince and Justin Temberlake), and under the tutelage of Jazz Ensemble director Mickey Bass (one of the original Jazz Messengers). After graduating from Ellington, Charles spent a number of years working as a freelance guitarist in the Washington, DC area. In 1995, he formed the Charles Wright Trio with Sean Peck on drums and fellow Ellington alumnus Mike Pryor on bass. This jazz/fusion unit has since shared the stage with Al DiMeola, Bill Bruford, Marcus Miller, Billy Sheehan, Happy The Man and Ike Willis (Frank Zappa). The trio released their first album, The Time Is Wright, in 2001 and Charles' latest solo release, New Cycle, features Sean and Mike on six tracks.

He has also performed with the Johnny Artis Band for a number of years. Charles is currently performing regularly with his latest project, 'Aura' featuring Mike Pryor on bass and Paul Dudley on drums.
